Chintan Environmental Research and Action Group is a non-profit organization focused on environmental justice, sustainable waste management, and climate change. They work directly with wastepickers, and have helped form Safai Sena: a registered group of waste handlers in Delhi, which includes a wide range of roles like waste pickers, doorstep collectors, itinerant buyers, and small-scale recyclers. This group was formed in 2001 to ensure safe working conditions and wider recognition for waste management workers. In partnership with Chintan, Safai Sena works to influence policy, build skills for recyclers, and raise awareness about the importance of waste management. Their aim is to advocate for better representation for waste workers with a community-led approach, whether through economic opportunities or policy change.
